5 Ways Corporations Can Save On Travel

1. Advance Air Bookings - meaning bookings made at least 2 weeks before travel, when discounts are better.

2. Restricted Airfares - these can produce better savings even after taking the cost of changes and cancellations into account.

3. Preferred Suppliers - for lower average prices

4. Traveler Comfort - referring to rules restricting upgrades or access to top-category hotels

5. Preferred Booking Channels - meaning using the travel company's travel management products, which boosts compliance

Small Cities Should Prepare For Fewer Flights

Fuel prices are forcing airlines to opt out of servicing rural communities. With fuel prices high, smaller cities could see cuts in airline service that has been subsidized by the federal government since the industry was deregulated three decades ago. So far this year, airlines have asked to opt out of subsidy contracts to 20 places — nearly matching the total of 24 from all of last year.

NEW ENTRY PROCEEDURES FOR TRAVEL TO JAPAN

The Japanese Immigration Bureau has added a step to the entry formalities for visitors to Japan. Beginning November 20, 2007, all visitors to Japan, including overnight transit passengers and airline crew members, will be required to have their fingerprints and facial photograph digitally recorded. This process is very similar to the U.S. Visit program that the U.S. instituted several years ago.

After passport inspection, visitors to Japan will have their fingerprints recorded (both index fingers) and their face photographed. Fingerprints and photos will be taken electronically.

All foreign nationals entering Japan are required to complete this step. Passengers transiting the airport on the same day are not considered visitors, and so are exempt from all immigration formalities.

The following foreign nationals are also exempt from this procedure:

1. Special Permanent Residents.
2. Persons under 16 years of age.
3. Diplomats and persons on Official Business.
4. Persons invited by the head of any national administrative organization.
5. Persons prescribed by a Ministry of Justice ordinance as being equivalent to either (3) or (4).
Any non-exempt visitor who fails to comply with the new procedure will be denied entry to Japan. The new program is designed to further enhance security and guard against potential terrorist or foreign criminal entry into Japan.

A video explaining the procedures and the reasons behind it is available online at http://nettv.gov-online.go.jp/prg/prg1203.html .
